Atticus' quote is implying that we cant judge something by the the way it seems.  We need to actually love it and experience it.  Boo Radley gets cheated because the kids make judgements about him that they have heard from other people and the kids have no idea what they are talking about when they make judgements about him because they haven't met him or actually talked to him. What Atticus is saying is that the kids shouldn't talk like this about other people until they actually get to know them.  The kids make judgements about Boo and they shouldn't because they don't know him and they have no idea who he really is.
