How to Understand a Person

Atticus Finch

At the end of Chapter 3, Atticus says, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view, until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."  What does Atticus mean by this?  After finishing Chapters 4 and 5, apply this quote to Boo Radley.  Your response should include two things 1) Your interpretation of Atticus' quote, and 2) What the story looks like if you "climb into" Boo Radley's skin.  Please title your post with your name and Ch. 4 and 5.

  3. Atticus means that it is hard to understand another persons point of view unless you have had the same expeinces as them. Not everyone's life story is the same as yours, so before you judge them you should try to imagine what it would feel like to be judged.
This town has has always judged Boo Radley even though many of them have never even met him. Boo Radley has never done anything to earn his reputation of being crazed and insane. He is probably confused at why people think he is crazy just because he rarely comes out of his house.

  4. Atticus means that you can never really understand someone and what they're going through until you walk in their shoes and see things from their perspective. I think it is similar to the saying "dont judge a book by its cover." That you shouldnt make assumptions until you know what there feeling or what the inside of the book is like.
The story from Boo Radley's point of view is probably confused and frusrtated why all these people judge him so easily without having met him. I think he would be curious as to why these young kids are constantly making up stories and plays about him and wonders why they have the urge to meet him. We would probaby be hearing stories about the other towns people for they might seem weird to Boo Radley.

  5. Atticus means that you only know your way of living, but you don't know some one else's way of living until you live their way for a while.

Atticus means that you can't really judge a person or base things off what other people have said until you really meet them or truly think about what they're going through. He's telling his kids to not judge Boo because they don't even know him, they've just heard stories about him. I think Atticus is saying that before you make any assumptions on a person, you have to imagine what it'd be like being that person.
From Boo's perspective he's probably really confused and kind of angered at why everyone thinks lowly of his family. He has probably heard all of the rumors but doesnt know what he can do to stop them. He probably doesn't even want to go outside at a normal time because he's afraid of what others around him will do. All he can do without worrying too much is sit inside his house and look out his window and watch the kids sprint by his house.

  7. Atticus means that you can never truly understand someone until you put yourself in their shoes. If we never consider this, then we would never understand what life is like in that person's eyes. Therefore, we cant judge a book by its cover, by the rumors we hear or the actions that these people might have done. In order to really understand them we must put ourselves in their shoes and see their perspective of things.
The story from Boo Radely's point of view is most likely sad, lonely, and confusing. He must feel like such an outcast because of all the things that are said about him, and they might not even be true. Since all of the people in Maycomb are terrified of him, Boo has nothing better to do than hide in the house all day.

  8. Boo, or Arthur, Radley is probably mad and frustrated at the rumors that people are talking about him after people heard he stabbed his father. People think he is an insane person who watches people in their sleep and cause the problems in the town. And he is frustrated about that.

Atticus means that in order to understand someone, you must first try to figure out how they feel and why they feel that way. He's also saying that making generalizations about someone you don't know, like the kids did to Boo Radley, can quite possibly be false. A person may criticize others very often, but later you might figure out that they do it because they want to help that other person become better. In Boo Radley's point of view, he might be slightly annoyed because of the kids. He also could be a little sad that he doesn't have a normal life, and that rumors constantly fly about him and things he supposedly did. Maybe he is shy, and he doesn't know how to communicate with other people so they think he is crazy.
